چکیده

This paper introduces Modified Altitudeand DiveGuidance laws for escaping a microburst with turbulence. First, a new safety metric is constructed that quantifies the aircraft upward force capability in a microburst encounter. In the absence of turbulence, the safety factor is shown to be a decreasing function of altitude. This suggests that descending to a low altitude may improve safety in the sense that the aircraft will have more upward force capability to maintain its altitude. In the presence of stochastic turbulence, the safety factor is treated as a random variable and its probability distribution function is analytically approximated as a function of altitude. This approximation allows us to determine the highest safe altitude at which the aircraft may descend, hence avoiding to descend too low. This highest safe altitude is used as the commanded altitude in Modified Altitudeand Dive-Guidance. Monte Carlo simulations show that these Modified Altitudeand DiveGuidance strategies can decrease the probability of minimum altitude being less than a given value without compromising the probability of crash. That is, an aircraft with Modified Altitudeor Dive-Guidance can have a higher recovery altitude without increasing the risk of ground contact or stall.

An experimental study on wind loads acting on a high-rise building model induced by microburst-like winds

In the present study, an experimental investigation is conducted to quantify the characteristics of the microburst-induced wind loads (i.e., both static and dynamic wind loads) acting on a high-rise building model, compared to those with the test model placed in conventional atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) winds. The experimental study is performed by using an impinging-jet-based microburst si...

An experimental study of flow fields and wind loads on gable-roof building models in microburst-like wind

An experimental study was conducted to quantify the flow characteristics of microburst-like wind and to assess the resultant wind loads acting on low-rise, gable-roof buildings induced by violent microburst-like winds compared with those in conventional atmospheric boundary layer winds. The experimental work was conducted by using an impinging-jet-based microburst simulator in the Department of...

Comparison of microburst-wind loads on low-rise structures of various geometric shapes

Microburst can produce downdraft and strong divergent outflow wind, whose characteristics are distinct from the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) wind. In the present study, microburst-wind loading effects on low-rise structures a cubic-shaped building, a grain bin and two gable-roofed buildings – are evaluated and compared by performing laboratory tests on scaled models using a microburst simul...

Modeling of microburst outflows using impinging jet and cooling source approaches and their comparison

Microbursts have been simulated and studied using different physical and numerical modeling methods. In the present study, the steady impinging jet model was comprehensively studied by using a 2-footdiameter (0.61 m) microburst simulator available in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Iowa State University. Point measurements and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) results revealed a detai...
